Bloom With Spring

Bloom With Spring

The changing of seasons is symbolic of our health in many ways. Just as nature goes through cycles of growth, decay and regeneration, so do our bodies. Spring is the time for birth, growth and renewal. We see signs of this as energy emerges from the surface of the Earth through sprouting green plants, blooming flowers and new life cycles beginning in wildlife. Mother Earth begins to awaken from a long, winter slumber- just as our bodies do. This is an opportune time for cleansing and detoxifying in all areas of our multi-dimensional health. Keep reading for some of my favorite tips on how to get started.

1.Clean up your diet. During this time, your body might begin to crave food that is supportive of it's natural detoxification and digestive processes. Listen to your body and honor these cravings by incorporating fresh, cleansing, in season produce and nutrient-dense foods. Farmers markets are an excellent way to get seasonal fruits and vegetables (and support your local farmers and agricultural economy, bonus!) You may even consider doing a gentle cleanse that is right for your body.

Some seasonal spring produce:

  • Asparagus
  • Sprouts
  • Greens (collard, beet, turnip)
  • Lettuce (leaf, iceberg, romaine)
  • Rhubarb
  • Mushrooms
  • Arugula
  • Parsnips
  • Leeks
  • Rutabaga
  • Turnips
  • Radishes
  • Peas

2. Mindful Movement. Spring brings longer daylight and warmer weather, working in our favor to getting outside for some movement. Switch up your routine with your favorite outdoor activity(hiking, walking, biking, etc.)and enjoy the benefits of the fresh air and sunshine. Regular physical activity helps to keep the body in motion, boosts blood flow and oxygen uptake, and improves the body's natural detoxification mechanism. Spring is also the perfect time for energy healing practices such as grounding (also known as earthing). This refers to the practice of connecting our bodies with the Earth's surface by walking barefoot or sitting or lying down on the ground. Find movement that brings YOU joy!

Benefits of Grounding:
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Improve sleep
  • Decrease stress
  • Increase energy
  • Improve mood
  • Enhance immune function
  • Reduce pain and discomfort

 3. Detox. Detoxing is an ongoing journey, it occurs daily and it looks different for everyone. You don't have to do a restrictive juice cleanse in order to help your body do some detoxing this spring. Detoxing in the spring can help to eliminate toxins that have accumulated in the body over the winter months.  Aiding your body in its natural detoxification process can be as simple as getting good quality sleep, staying hydrated and getting regular exercise. Some of my other favorite detoxing hacks are taking epsom salt baths, using infrared saunas and dry brushing.

4. Spring Clean Your Cleaning Products. The spring season is famous for being the time to declutter and deep clean our homes, but many household cleaning products contain toxic chemicals that are harmful for the environment and human body including; phthalates(endocrine disruptor), triclosan(hormone disruptor), formaldehyde(carcinogen), ammonia(respiratory irritation) and chlorine(skin and eye irritation). To reduce exposure to these toxins, it's important to read labels and choose cleaning products that are free of harmful chemicals. Alternatively, you can make your own cleaning products using natural ingredients you probably already have in your home, such as vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. Regularly airing out your home and using natural air purifiers, such as plants, can also help improve indoor air quality and reduce exposure to toxins.

My favorite DIY All Purpose Cleaners:

5. Connect With Others. Here's the big one.  Having positive relationships with others is crucial for our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Studies have shown that having positive relationships can improve our physical health, including lowering our risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and improving immune function. During the winter, we tend to go into hibernation mode and stay in more - which isn't a negative thing, there is a season and a need for that. But as spring arrives, what if we transitioned into a practice of showing up for others? We have already learned that spring is a time for growth and renewal, let strengthening your relationships with others be a part of your growth this season. Practice giving and receiving, build community in your life, and watch your physical, mental and emotional health transform.

Final thoughts...

Spring is a season that offers a unique opportunity for personal growth and renewal. It's a time to focus on both your own well-being and the world around you. Whatever you are doing, whether making shifts in your diet, practicing a detox method or incorporating new exercise, remember to always tune in, listen to your body and honor what it is telling you. And as always..."Take care of the soul that takes care of others." Mary Davis

Wishing you abundant wellness this spring!
